My absolute favorite mailer of this election cycle (and perhaps my favorite of all time) has to be this piece sent by the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine PAC (as tweeted by Kennebec Journal/Morning Sentinel managing editor Scott Monroe):
Interesting SAM PAC mailer in China House race: If you vote for guy, hungry wolves will eat you. #mepolitics pic.twitter.com/MsL2IOfs2j

That’s right, their claim (backed by photos of snarling predators) is that Democratic State House District 79 candidate John Glowa wants “more taxes and more wolves” and wants to put “wolves in our backyards.”
There is, believe it or not, some policy background to this hyperbolic attack. According SAM’s newsletter, they consider Glowa a “sworn enemy of sportsmen” because he has helmed the Maine Wolf Coalition and has advocated for the reintroduction and protection of a wolf population in Maine.
Glowa has taken the attack in stride, posting a cartoon of the big bad wolf on his campaign Facebook page and writing “Thank you to SAM PAC for bringing the matter of my support for natural wolf recovery and the need for broader based fish and wildlife funding to the attention of the voters.”
Glowa is facing incumbent Republican Tim Theriault. The Bangor Daily News rates the seat Strong Republican.
